he was the third black England winger after the excellent Laurie Cunningham and the much under-rated Mark Chamberlain from Port Vale (oxlades dad)

Not sure where I stand on John Barnes. Was a class player and seems like a decent enough bloke; but he has played the race card on a number of occasions, claiming that he hasn't been given sufficient managerial opportunities because he is black. This despite that fact that he was given the managerial post at Celtic, one of the finest clubs to be found anywhere, having had absolutely no prior managerial experience. That's not a bad opportunity by any standard!

Well let us know when you decide won't you, and I'm sure 'Digger' himself will be anxious too.

Good player whose powers and reputation were exaggerated by THAT goal.

Brilliant player by what I saw with my own eyes, tore us a new one on more than one occasion at Upton park, scored some incredible goals elsewhere.

Good club player
Cost England the 1986 World Cup as they persisted with someone so obviously not up to international football for a ludicrous number of games.

His domestic career was phenomenal. His England career started well but he ended up just being part of the furniture and was playing without really doing the business.

I alwasy admired John Barnes as a player but do find it hard to do so since he retired and, as others have said, played the race card in response to a lack of managerial roles when, in fact, much of it was to do with the fact that he was clearly a poor manager.

Was a tremendous player though and to hear the monkey chants aimed at him when he was playing made me shudder.

one of the best players I've ever seen live. Around 87 he was untouchable

I had my wedding photos taken on the steps outside the hotel we had the reception at. It was the only way in and out of the hotel.

It took ages, like wedding photos do. All the time there was someone standing around at the back, out of shot, waiting patiently to get out without complaining.

When we finished he quietly walked around the edges of the throng to his waiting car.

It was John Barnes. He smiled and said congratulations. Didn't do the "don't you know who I am" and get out before we'd finished.

For that reason I have always liked John Barnes.

Sven

Barnes made one substitute appearance at the 86 world cup, when he came on against argentina and almost turned the match on its head, setting up Lineker for a goal and an identical chance that jug ears should've buried.

John is a skills related coach and an enlightened type of character

Tranmere Rovers players allegedly nicknamed Barnes and Jason McAteer Dumb and Dumber in the short period they managed the club.

Re: John Barnes - Sports Life Stories
I recall him being at Newcastle during the 97/98 season, well past his prime, but still managed to smash a volley in from about 20 yards to give the Toon a 1-0 win at Upton Park.

Re: John Barnes - Sports Life Stories
Cholo is correct, Barnes had a blinder in that short sub appearance v Argentina. The 2nd header Lineker ended up in the net but the ball sadly fell the other side of it.

Re: John Barnes - Sports Life Stories
Great player but anyone that chooses Jason McAteer as his number 2 has no place in football management, regardless of colour.

Still have no idea how that stayed out the net.

Re: John Barnes - Sports Life Stories
My memory obviously deserts me but he was a major disappointment at international level.
Like Hoddle

Maybe he should have been a coach rather than a manager. Not sure how any manager cant win games with Celtic. That must take some doing
